Female Dog Names
With the development of the relationship between man and his best friend, the most popular female dog names aren’t really female names at all. “Duke”, “Jake”, “Doug”, “Baxter” and “Buddy” round out the top five female dog names and are used nationwide.
Goldens, Beagles, Springer Spaniels, German Shorthairs and Labrador Retrievers inherit these female dog names regardless of their intended duty. Whether breed to be a titled hunter, a loyal companion, or just part of the family, female dog names are given to male dogs for many reasons.
Men don’t always do things that make sense; including naming their dogs, without any thought to gender, one reason men choose female dog names could be based on an old girlfriend they couldn’t keep. The male bonding between man and dog is inevitable, unless of course the dog is difficult; or the man, which is why he couldn’t keep the girlfriend in the first place, therefore, the replacement concept begins. Maybe the intended purpose for a dog is to be a titled hunter and the ex wife did exactly that – hunted him down and in the end, left him with nothing! Whenever the dog is trained, the man vicariously shocks the dog and envisions his ex’s yelp!
Whatever the case may be, female dog names are also given to dogs that are actually females. Sometimes it gets silly. People choose female dog names that are most commonly used to name infant children. Names like “Mandy” and “Josie” are names typically associated with individual people. Therefore, when you are overhearing a conversation that two people have about “Josie” dying, you think they’re actually talking about a person they know. How foolish you feel when you send flowers only to be thanked and told that it was a dog!
Of course, ther are those who treat their dogs like people; actual members of the family who have insurance…yes, health insurance for dogs. With the same premise in mind; that if one gets hurt, sick or needs another type of medical care, there will be premiums paid to defer the costs associated with that care. The only thing better about pet Health insurance than ours is that they don’t care who actually provides the service; there’s not an in-network and out-of-network clause. Wouldn’t the government do something about our pets having a better plan than our own? That’s for another time.
Female dogs are the best types of pets, even better than male dogs. As far as hunters, the female dog is very focused; where the male dog is so busy “marking his territory” that he fails to learn as quickly, and consequently, female dogs out perform male dogs in the field. As with any species of female, though, the female dogs have attitude and in great supply! There are different personalities to dogs, as any dog lover would confirm, and if the female dog wants something that the owner does give into, the nasty looks and sighing start, followed by a chewed up Armani suit or a favorite book!
So, for whatever reason you choose to name your dog a name that is not reflective of the actual gender of the dog, today, anything goes! Just be careful about sending flowers too soon.
