The American Staffordshire Terrier gives the impression of great strength for his size, a well put-together dog, muscular, but agile and graceful, keenly alive to his surroundings. He should be stocky, not long-legged or racy in outline. His courage is proverbial. Over the past 50 years, careful breeding has produced today's American Staffordshire Terrier who is affectionate, reliable, and an especially good dog for children.

The Staffordshire Terrier has a very short coat that requires minimal, to sometimes no grooming. The coat should always be short and straight, being the same length all over the body of the dog. The coat of this breed should remain stiff to the touch and be very close lying to the body of the dog. The coat should be glossy and never be soft or silky.
Perhaps no other breed in the world has a reputation as undeserved as does the American Staffordshire Terrier, or Pit Bull as it is often called colloquially. Almost everyone has heard stories of vicious Pit Bulls injuring or killing dogs, children and the occasional adult, and many states and counties have even placed restrictions on ownership of the breed. However, these acts are more often than not the product of intentionally brutal training by malicious owners.
Training can be a challenge because of his pushy yet sensitive character. His natural temperament towards people is gentle and loving, unfortunately some have been improperly handled giving the American Staffordshire Terrier a bad rap.
The American Staffordshire Terrier does not require much grooming at all being very shorthaired. They shed very little, however depending on the climate they can become an average shedding breed. To remove dead or loose hairs, a rub down with a harsh and dry towel, or a specially made rubber glove would be sufficient. Dry shampooing is recommended as opposed to bathing, however an occasional bath is all right.
The American Staffordshire Terrier needs a good deal of exercise, which can be accomplished with a daily walk or game in the park. Pit Bulls are easy to train, but take special care to discourage any aggressive tendencies in your dog during puppyhood. Since many people have negative opinions toward Pit Bulls, it might be a good idea to introduce your dog to the neighbors and show them how what they hear in the news does not tell the whole story.
