American Foxhound

The American Foxhound is an ideal choice for those who live in rural areas or on large farms. His short glossy coat is easy to keep clean.

A foxhound is a large hunting hound. Foxhounds hunt in packs and, like all scent hounds, have a strong sense of smell. They are used in hunts for foxes, hence the name.

Distinguished from his English cousins by his finer bones, more leg length and more angulated hindquarters. The American Foxhound was not bred to be a family pet, but if he is well socialized as a young pup he will adapt to family life.

The American Foxhound is sweet, kind, loyal, and loving at home. They can make fine pets, but as with all hounds they need careful training, excellent socialization and owners that are willing to give them ample exercise. Like Greyhounds, they can live successfully in city apartments, but they require regular opportunities to exercise. They cannot be expected to act like retrievers, because though affectionate, they are independent by nature.

A true hunting dog, the American Foxhound is happiest in the field and on the trail. With its powerful sense of smell, this dog is easily distracted by various scents, and once it has decided to follow one you will have a difficult time calling it off. The breed hunts with the passion of a warrior, but is gentle, affectionate, and great with children in the home.
