American Eskimo Dog

In the early years of this century, the American Eskimo Dog was a favorite circus dog. Quick and bright in his eye-catching snowy-white coat, the Eskie was used for many acts, including one that involved walking a tightrope.

The American Eskimo is a descendant from the German Spitz. His face, coat and lush tail are Spitz-type. He has a pointed muzzle and erect ears. Nicknamed the "Eskie" he has been bred to be a house dog, companion and watch dog.

The American Eskimo breed is beautiful, and agile. The American Eskimo is 10-35 pounds in weight. They come in three size categories: standard, toy, and miniature, belongs to the Non-Sporting group.

Because of its quick wit and desire to please, the American Eskimo Dog is relatively easy to train and does well in competitive obedience. Though the dog can be a bit reserved at times, it is not considered to be an exceedingly shy breed. The American Eskimo Dog can be very good with kids if it receives sufficient exposure and interacts with children early in its life.

The American Eskimo Dog is compactly built and well balanced, with good substance, and an alert, smooth gait. The face is Nordic type with erect triangular shaped ears, and distinctive black points (lips, nose, and eye rims).

A fairly healthy breed, the American Eskimo Dog does not get sick very often; occasionally, one will see canine hip dysplasia, patellar luxation and progressive retinal atrophy in the breed.
