The Alaskan Malamute, one of the oldest Arctic sled dogs, was named after the native Inuit tribe called Mahlemuts, who settled along the shores of Kotzebue Sound in the upper western part of Alaska.
This breed sports a very beautiful double coat. The top coat is thick and coarse protecting it from even the most extreme weather conditions. Beneath the coarse coat is a very soft, dense, and oily coat. Colors may include light grays shading to black as well as sables to red. The legs and muzzle nearly always white.
As befitting a dog that was bred to hunt and pull in packs, the Alaskan Malamute has a sociable and team-oriented personality. The Alaskan Malamute can be aggressive toward strange dogs, and will readily give chase to small and large animals alike. Strangers, however, are another story, and the dog seems to have an instinct to trust people. While this trait makes the Alaskan Malamute a mediocre guard dog, it does much to improve this animal’s standing with people.
Malamutes are of various colors. Face markings are a distinguishing feature. These consist of a cap over the head, the face either all white or marked with a bar and/or mask. The tail is well furred, carried over the back, and has the appearance of a waving plume.
Training - bred for sledding and independence the Alaskan Malamute can prove to be stubborn. Don't let the stubbornness fool you though because they are highly intelligent!
The hardy Alaskan Malamute was once the primary means of transporting heavy loads through the Arctic, and it has never forgotten that legacy.
